Background
City & Country have taken on the restoration and conversion of four disused prisons, transforming them into contemporary living spaces. By their very nature, these properties will be highly individual and not for the feint hearted!
Concept
Our concept focused on Portsmouth’s Grade II listed Kingston Prison, built in 1877, and provided a theme for the other three locations to follow. There’s no hiding the fortifications and foreboding presence of the building, so we embraced building’s past head on with an approach that would set it up for the future. We referenced quirky Victorian illustrations with a touch of humour to paint a colourful and contemporary vision of life ‘inside’.
